Caravan Insurance
Common questions on caravan insurance
· Whilst being towed, it’s more than likely that your vehicles insurance will provide adequate cover but it is always best to check. With some insurers, failure to notify them of fitting a towing hitch can invalidate the whole policy
· Your lender may require that you take out caravan insurance if you are purchasing on finance.
· Whilst unhitched from your vehicle (i.e. on a site) you will require caravan insurance to be sure that you are covered for any accidental damage to third parties. E.g. if you are sited on an incline and the brake fails, should it run in to another caravan/vehicle/property, you will be liable for the damage unless you have opted to take out caravan insurance
· Additionally, good caravan insurance will cover you for theft, fire and accidental damage. Your policy may also cover the loss of stolen contents i.e. clothing, personal effects, audio and visual equipment
· Unfortunately, as with other high value items, theft is big business. It is estimated that well over 3000 thefts were committed last year alone. Whilst you can’t guarantee that you won’t be a victim it is important to take as many precautions as possible including taking out caravan insurance
· It is a good idea to search for caravan insurance quotes before purchasing. Some makes are difficult to insure due to their high desirability to thieves. Companies that do offer caravan insurance for such makes may charge a significant premium
· For UK holidays only the likelihood is that your caravan insurance will be cheaper. However if you are planning on travelling abroad you will need a more comprehensive caravan insurance policy
· When considering quotes check the policy carefully. Some caravan insurance providers will offer a ‘new for old’ policy on caravans up to 10 years old subject to certain stipulations
· Again when searching for caravan insurance, check the small print for clauses. For example, some policies may be invalidated if the caravan isn’t clamped when not in tow
· Is caravan insurance really worth it? With caravan insurance premiums starting as low as £50 per annum, then it’s hard to argue against insuring an investment that may have cost you many £1000’s of pounds
· With some awnings costing in excess of £1000.00 it is important to check whether your caravan insurance covers you for storm damage
