Buying guide for used caravans

Useful information when searching for used caravans

Looking for reliable used caravans can be fraught with as many perils as searching for a reliable second hand car. Even used caravans can go for big money. It’s a large investment yet many people are caught out by bad preparation Here is our guide when trawling those ads, dealers and private sellers for used caravans.

·        Before you get started you will need to know which used caravans are suitable for your vehicle. It may sound obvious but you could face fines of up to £1000 as well as points on your licence and invalidate your insurance if the caravan exceeds the vehicles towing limits.

·        Additionally, you need to consider the specification requirements when searching for used caravans. The layout and sleeping configuration are important but make sure that you have the required space to house the caravan when not in use. Checking the dimensions against your driveway or gated entrance for example sounds obvious but is easy to miscalculate

·        Once you have refined your search to those used caravans suitable for your vehicle, you should then research the market for differentials in prices for used caravans from private sellers and dealers.

·        Again it may sound obvious but don’t view used caravans in the dark, or at the very least, go back for a second viewing during daylight before committing. If it can be helped, try not to view used caravans whilst it’s raining. Water can hide a multitude of sins on the bodywork.

·        Take a torch with you. It is generally easier to check the undercarriage of used caravans than used vehicles. Make sure you take a torch and pay particular attention to the chassis, axels and of course tyres. The torch will also be handy for checking nooks and crannies within used caravans. Again make sure you check for any signs of water ingress

·        Try and get as much paperwork for the used caravans that you are viewing as possible. Check the service records, the CRiS documentation and also ask if the caravan is NCC approved

·        Conduct a CRiS search on any used caravans you are seriously considering committing too. A CRiS check will tell you if the used caravans are owned by sellers, whether there is any outstanding finance, if the caravan has ever been stolen or if it has been an insurance write-off.

·        Used caravans from dealers will carry a premium however you will have greater consumer protection. Make sure you come armed with research material of other, similar used caravans to increase your bargaining position. If you are thorough enough with your appraisal of the caravan then any defects can also be used to negotiate a better price.
